CHOOSING AN “ETERNAL” COMPANION
by Jeffrey Hilton
One of the most important decisions in life will be which person you marry. It is amazing how lightly some people take this decision. The number of people getting divorced in the church is high. It can be hard to find a relationship and some want to be married so badly they will take the first offer. One man was asked why he chose his wife. “She was the only one who never turned me down,” he said.
Once married some feel it is too late. If they made a wrong choice they feel they are stuck with that individual for eternity. However they are sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise. The key word is still promise. It is a two-way promise. This means the sealing takes effect once God has judged us worthy to be Gods ourselves. Women with abusive husbands aren’t eternally trapped. That would be calling God evil.
One of the reasons we are on the Earth is to choose an Eternal Companion. If I choose a job in this life I don’t have to stay at that job my entire life. Once a choice is made it doesn’t always mean we forfeit our free agency. If I don’t like a choice I have made then this is the best time for me to make a better choice. You choose your Eternal Companion every day, not once! Now is the time to prepare to meet God. If we stand before God and we are unhappy with our choice of Eternal companion then we did not do a good job of preparing to meet God. If we are worthy but our spouse isn’t then we will need a different companion in order to become Gods ourselves. Right is right and wrong is wrong. Every wrong choice we make will have to be fixed eventually and if we fix them right away we will be happier sooner.
How will we know when we have found our Eternal Companion? We are all entitled to receive personal revelation. As we spend time with the person we are considering, fast, pray, and when possible visit the temple we can know without a doubt.
